"Collectively, financial transaction records can make one narrow slice of life, how people rearrange their access to money, more legible."
Baker and Kueng's NBER working paper reviews how detailed financial transaction data from banks, financial applications, and payment intermediaries expands researchers' ability to understand household decision-making and aggregate economic fluctuations. Their work provides a research foundation for the chapter's central argument that additional financial observations make previously obscure patterns of human economic behavior more legible. The working paper was subsequently published in the Annual Review of Economics in 2022.
