"Financial transaction data can help predict major life events, including moving, childbirth, and relationship changes."
De Caigny and colleagues studied approximately 60 million debit transactions from around 132,000 customers, combining detailed transaction information with other customer records to predict moving, childbirth, new relationships, and relationship endings. Their models performed significantly better than random guessing, demonstrating how financial traces can expose patterns associated with major changes in people's lives. This provides an empirical foundation for the chapter's examples of personal circumstances becoming partially visible through financial behavior.
