PART 3 - THE THIRD AXIS CHAPTER 14: AGI & THE SYNTHESIZER The Eschaton Is Near

"Neo possesses a hollowed-out copy of Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation in The Matrix, explicitly connecting the film’s simulated reality to philosophical discussions of representation and reality."

The original March 1998 shooting script describes Neo hiding software inside a hollowed-out copy of Baudrillard's book. The script also explicitly contrasts the map with the territory when describing simulated reality, creating a particularly direct connection to the book's existing Map-versus-Territory framework and its concern with mistaking computational representations for reality itself.
