The NTSB found that the aircraft maintained its ground track for much of its remaining flight despite the incapacitated crew. Its final descent was accompanied by engine shutdown, aerodynamic stall and autopilot disengagement. This is an unusually clear example of automation successfully continuing a narrow task without being able to resolve the larger emergency.
