PART 3 - THE THIRD AXIS CHAPTER 13: SPECKLED INTELLIGENCE Chaos Is the Job

"You can hardly predict the behavior of the whole system just by looking at the individual flows, because complexity naturally emerges from their interactions over time."

Holland describes how interactions among adaptive agents generate collective behaviour that cannot be understood simply from knowledge of the individual components. His account of emergence supports the chapter's argument that understanding each individual workflow is insufficient to reliably anticipate the behaviour of an interconnected organization.
